Digital Camera Maintenance Tips

Digilifes Tips - Digital camera is not something new today and even photographers are now "obliged" to have it. Digital camera, supported by the sophistication of digital technology, with all its amenities makes it easier for photographers produce perfect photographic works, although of course photographic skills is still necessary.

Unlike the manual camera, digital cameras are equipped with electronic and digital components in addition to the basic components of a camera, which is very vulnerable. In order for a digital camera can function better and live longer, we need to treat it with great caution. Damage to electronic and digital components of a digital camera will adversely affect its performance.

Digital Camera Maintenance includes maintenance on key parts of digital cameras, namely the camera body, lenses, battery and memory card.

Camera Body Maintenance

To well treat a digital camera, you have to prevent your camera from factors as well as objects that can cause damages:

  • Shock and impact. Keep the camera in a container that secure and resilient to shocks. It is recommended to store your digital camera in a special camera bag. To avoid moist, put silica gel inside the camera bag. Always use a camera strap to bring your digital camera along with you in your journey.
  • Sunlight. Excessive direct contact with sunlight can cause significant damage to electronic equipments installed in your digital camera.
  • Camphor. Camphor is most dangerous to your digital camera causes damage mainly to the PCB (printed circuit board) and some elements of its chips, including other rubber-made parts of the camera. Digital camera malfunctions due to camphor will be difficult to repair.
  • Sea water. Sea water is also very dangerous that cause corrosion potential to your digital camera or other electronic devices.
  • Magnetic objects. Magnetic objects can cause adverse affects to the performance of electronic circuits in the camera.

Measures necessary to care for your digital camera are:

  • Clean your digital camera from dust and dirt before storing it. Dirt (dust) can cause slight scratch on the very sensitive lens / sensor of your digital camera.
  • Take your digital camera to a service center to perform maintenance on a regular basis; do not wait until any single damage occurs. Regular maintenance either performed every 6 months, once a year or at every time needed considering the intensity of your camera’s usage. Always go to an authorized digital camera service center.
  • Store cameras, lenses and other accessories in a dry box with humidity control equipment if you are not going to use it for a long time.
Lens Care

To take care of your digital camera’s lens, you must carefully observe the followings:
  • Keep your camera in a cool and dry container to avoid lens fungus.
  • Do not touch the lens directly with the fingers to avoid scratches on the lens.
  • Remove the lens from your digital camera if it will be stored in a period of more than a week, and put the lens-cup (cover) on to prevent from dust.
  • Avoid high frequent lens cleaning. Cleaning the lens too often may result in poor image quality due to scratches from tissue/cleaning cloth sweeps. Simply use a mild blower to remove dust from the lens or the sensor on your digital camera (specifically for SLR cameras).

When cleaning the lens:

  • Clean the front and back side of the lens with lens blower and lens brush to remove dust particles. Do not just clean the lens with a lens cloth or lens paper to avoid scratch on the coated lens surface that can cause permanent disruption on photographs.
  • Wipe the lens gently and slowly with a dry lens cloth / paper with a circular motion from center of the lens to the edge.
  • If needed, use lens cleaning fluid for cleaning up dirt that is difficult to clean. Do not drop directly on the lens, squirt on lens paper first, and then rub the lens gently.
Battery Care

Here are the things you must observe and do to get your digital camera batteries last long:

  • Remove the battery from the camera body if you will not use the camera for more than 2 days. This is to avoid battery leakage which may cause damage to the installed electronic elements in your digital camera.
  • Put the battery in a cool, dry and protected container while avoid environment with extreme temperatures above 43 grade Celsius that may cause permanent damage to the battery.
  • Do not recharge the battery excessively. Immediately stop charging if the battery has been re-filled.
  • Recharge the battery before or after storage for long periods.
Do not mix the use of old and new batteries, and use of different brand batteries.
Memory Card Treatment
  • Treat your memory card as well by taking into account the followings:
  • Format the internal and external memory card for first time use.
  • Insert the memory card carefully and position it correctly.
  • Do not remove the memory card while the camera is still on to avoid damaging the image or the memory card itself.
  • Keep the memory card in its container when not in use.
With good treatment, your digital camera will be able to work as you expected and durable.
